Health means many different things to different people, and nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle. You can eat all the leafy greens, and drink all the smoothies you can stomach, only to find there is still something missing. This is why we need an “integrative” approach. Integrative Nutrition explores healthy practices for physical health, mental health and spiritual wellbeing by considering things such as relationships, career fulfillment, and spirituality. Although nutrition is an incredibly important pillar of health, nourishment is not only found on your plate. The human body is a super intelligent bio-computer. The heart doesn’t skip a beat, the lungs don’t forget to breath, and as humans, we are quite literally designed to survive. Every bit of food we consume is information for our bodies. All of our food is interpreted by the body as messages that either help or hinder us. With this in mind, we can venture to say that, when something is awry, it is often the body’s way of sending us a message in return. The trouble is, we often don’t know how to interpret these messages, and if the issue goes unchecked, our body ends up practically screaming. Historically, nutrition has been an immensely controversial science with one secret diet or fad trend after another. In the words of David Katz, “we are a quick fix, active ingredient, silver bullet kind of society.” This way of thinking is causing more issues than solutions, and it doesn’t take into consideration that every body is different. This is why, as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, Kara focuses on the principle of bio-individuality - the idea that everyone’s needs are unique. She takes a client-centered approach with an emphasis on education that empowers clients to be confident in making decisions regarding nutrition and overall wellbeing. Clients play a role in co-creating a plan involving realistic yet monumental changes that further their progress towards health and happiness - think small hinge, big door.
